Price freeze on Newry Swimming Pool welcomed
SDLP Newry Councillor Kevin McAteer has welcomed the Council’s decision to hold off on the recent swimming pool price hike and has described it as ‘a victory for the people’.
The decision comes after a recent shadow development committee meeting where a review of the prices was conducted and was unanimously backed by all Councillors present.
Whilst this meeting was on a local union, Unite in the Community, held a picket outside of the council building protesting against the price hike.
Speaking to Newry Times, McAteer said, “This is a victory for the people of Newry. When the news broke of a price hike at Newry swimming pool it was met with anger at the extortionate prices for the unemployed, disabled and pensioners.
“I have been working with unite as well as members of the community to highlight the issue and I even took to the picket line on Tuesday evening in support of the those who were against the price hike.
He added, “After speaking with people after the decision I can say the news is very welcome. Well done to everyone involved.”
