Praise for PIPS Newry & Mourne

Local MLA Mickey Brady has praised the services of support and care provided by local charity PIPS Newry & Mourne.

Speaking after recently attending the AGM of PIPS Newry & Mourne told Newry Times, “PIPS Newry & Mourne offers the community a targeted response to suicide and self harm and is the leading suicide charity in the area.

“The professionalism of their committed services of support and care are valued not only by those availing of them, but by us all.”

Brady went on to say that tackling inequalities is a key factor in suicide prevention. He explained, “Suicide has touched so many families and communities right across Ireland. It impacts on young and old, male and female, from all walks of life.

“While suicide affects everyone, it has been well documented that poverty and poor health and education have a huge impact on people’s mental health and wellbeing. These can lead to addiction problems and low self esteem, which in turn can increase vulnerability and isolation.

“We can help prevent suicide by challenging inequalities and deprivation and promoting positive mental health. Programmes have been put in place to tackle suicide in areas of high deprivation and it is crucial these services are supported and expanded,” he insisted.

The Newry & Armagh MLA added, “I would encourage anyone who is experiencing a personal crisis to reach out and seek help. There are many organisations such as PIPS, The Niamh Louise Foundation, Samaritans and Lifeline and others who provide round the clock help and support to those in need.”
