Sinn Féin councillor Terry Hearty has welcomed major road, footpath and drainage improvements in the Crossmaglen area following a sustained lobbying campaign.

“There had been serious problems at St. Patrick’s Primary School with a flooding issue which had been ongoing for a number of years,” he told Newry Times.

“The main drain that flows between the school and Ard Ross had been severely damaged over the years and both Newry & Mourne District Council and NI Water were involved in bringing this issue to a resolution.

“I am satisfied now that this problem has been resolved and I will now be working with Road Service to have the road outside the school resurfaced. Road Service have informed me that it would be better to do this work during school holidays to avoid any disruption to classes.

“I have also been informed by Roads Service that the flooding issue at the top of the Square will be resolved and also that pedestrian signs will be erected on both sides of St. Patrick’s Primary School,” he explained.

“In addition dangerous double bend signs will be erected on approach to the sharp bends between St. Patrick’s Primary School and Carron Crossroads. This is a popular walking route along the Carron Road /Creamery Road and back on the Newry Road to Crossmaglen.

Hearty added, “I have also arranged for new Play Ground signs to be erected for Ard Ross at the entrance from the Carron Road and the entrance from Blayney Road. I also raised the recurrent issue of potholes on the Blayney and Dundalk Roads and I am assured that these will be dealt with. I wish to thank Roads Service for their ongoing support in these matters.”
