‘HERsay the theme for International Woman’s Day’ – Ruane
Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has said that International Woman’s day on the 8th March is an opportunity to promote equality for all women including those in the gay community who face hardship everyday of their lives.
Attending a launch of a book highlighting the lives of lesbian women in the 70’s and 80’s Ruane stated, “The book Threads is being launched at Waterstones Bookshop in Belfast again as part of the celebration of International Woman’s Day to highlight this years theme of HERstory.
“Threads is a collection of stories from women who tell of their experience of being lesbian during the 70’s and 80’s and how it impacted upon their lives. If we are serious about creating a society of equals then not only do we need to look at the overall role of women in society but also at marginalised women groups.
“It is pointless bringing equality to women in general if we are to discriminate against lesbian women, women from ethnic minorities or disabled women.
Ruane added, “This book launch sets the tone for this years International Woman’s Day celebration and I would call on everyone to make this year the year in which we make a difference and make equality a reality for everyone and allow all women to have HERstory.”
