Killean Playgroup Go Nuts for Birds!
Children and staff at Killean Playgroup recently got their hands dirty helping our local garden birds survive this cold snap.
Danielle Begley, Biodiversity Officer for Newry and Mourne District Council visited the nursery to talk to the children about the importance of our garden birds.
“The children got involved by making their own bird feeders out of recycled yoghurt tubs, something that is very simple and that we can all do at home!” said Danielle.
Newry and Mourne District Council are currently reviewing their Local Biodiversity Action Plan for the district. This document, which lists all of the important habitats and species in the Newry and Mourne area and how we can protect them into the future, depends on the involvement of local people.
Danielle explained, “Knowing what bird species we have in our gardens is very important as we need to know what we have before we can decide how to look after them!”
Deirdre Turley from Killean Playgroup stated, “The children love learning about wildlife and getting involved with practical activities like this. We’ve all learnt a lot from today’s visit!”
