Boylan raises concerns over proposed HGV Levy
Sinn Fein MLA Cathal Boylan has requested a briefing from Department of Environment officials on new proposals to introduce a levy on road hauliers using the North’s road network.
Speaking to Newry Times, Boylan said, “During last week’s environment committee meeting myself and other committee members were informed of a consultation on the introduction of a new levy for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) which started earlier this month and will end on February 4th.
“I have serious concerns over the imposition of any new charges on the road haulage industry which will impact across the island and which will affect All Ireland trade especially given the harsh economic conditions this industry has operated in over the last number of years.”
Boylan stated that whilst he awaits the briefing from the department to ascertain all the detail he would take this opportunity to encourage all those across the industry such as haulage companies, freight companies with an international dimension or other motoring organisations to participate in the consultation process.
