‘Urgent debate needed on new vaccine for Meningitis B’ – Ritchie

SDLP MP for South Down, Margaret Ritchie has called for a Westminster debate on the new vaccine for Meningitis B.

Speaking at Business questions in the House of Commons Ritchie stated, “Meningitis remains an unpredictable disease that is every parent’s worst nightmare.

“So many parents have experienced the tragic loss of a child, or had to cope with severe disability brought on by the disease, and we must do everything we can to fight this.

“While there is great hope in the new Bexsero vaccine it is deeply regrettable the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has decided not to include it in the routine immunisation programme.

Ritchie added, “I think it is vital there is a parliamentary debate on this issue, and I will continue to make this case as, for every week that passes, two lives will be lost to this terrible disease and many more victims and families will be left to cope with the life-altering effects of Meningitis B.”
