Newry parking announcement receives ‘cautious welcome’

Local SDLP MLA Seán Rogers has given a cautious welcome to the D.R.D. announcement which will see the introduction of a new reduced tariff of five hours parking for just one pound.

Newry is among twenty-five towns across Northern Ireland set to benefit from a special Christmas parking rate, which Rogers says he hopes will prove successful in bringing much needed additional trade to our town centers.

“The reduction and simplification of parking fees,” he explained, “will certainly make it easier for those fortunate enough to secure a parking space in places like Newry and Downpatrick.

“These prolonged parking arrangements however will create less movement of traffic and inevitably result in more cars using ‘private’ parking spaces.”

Conscious that it can often be confusing to distinguish between public and private car parking spaces the SDLP MLA advised all motorists to ‘check parking signs’.

He added, “During the festive season the last thing we want to see is motorists being charged extortionate parking fines by private companies.”

The parking arrangements will be in operation from 2nd December 2013 to 11th January 2014.
