Gibbons calls on public to stay safe this Halloween

Rostrevor Sinn Féin representative Mark Gibbons has sent an appeal to the public to be ‘firework safe’ this Halloween.

Speaking to Newry Times, Gibbons urged people to be safe this Halloween and always follow the firework code.

“It is extremely important that young people should watch and enjoy fireworks at a safe distance and follow all of the relevant safety rules for using sparklers. Adults should be the only ones who deal with firework displays and the lighting of fireworks.

“They should also take care of the safe disposal of fireworks once they have been used. I would also appeal to people to be considerate with elderly neighbours and pets when they are using fireworks. Every year many people dread Halloween because of the huge amount of fireworks that will be used irresponsibly.

Gibbons added, “The reality is that fireworks are causing serious injuries, and there will be a certain degree of fear in the community on Halloween night, when the use of fireworks will unfortunately result in people, and particularly children, being maimed and injured. I would urge everyone in the area to please be safe and enjoy the Halloween festivities.”
