Rogers urges OFMdFM to make representations on behalf of Undocumented Irish

SDLP MLA Sean Rogers has urged the First and Deputy First Minister to make what representations they can on behalf of the undocumented Irish ahead of US Immigration reform legislation coming before the House of Representatives.

Rogers was speaking following questions to OFMdFM in which he raised the matter.

He said, “I believe the First and Deputy First Minister must use their influence to lobby on behalf of the undocumented Irish ahead of US Immigration reform legislation coming before the House of Representatives.

“Throughout this Island many families have seen their loved ones leave for the promise of a new and exciting life in America. This legislation will afford greater rights to the undocumented Irish if it passes through Congress.

“I am disappointed that yesterday the First Minister dismissed making representations on behalf of the undocumented Irish who come from all parts of our community.

“The First and Deputy First Minister have during their visits to the United States engaged with a wide range of people to secure investment in Northern Ireland. They could during these discussions make the appropriate representations on behalf of the undocumented Irish who make a very valuable contribution to American society.

Rogers added, “Comprehensive reform of the US Immigration reform has the ability to improve the lives of our loved ones on the other side of the Atlantic and surely the First and Deputy First Minister can support efforts to see that reform through.”
