A local fitness instructor is on a crusade to help the local community get in shape and get rid of those excess pounds.

Newry man Eamon Kearney, 28, announced this week the launch of his new business, Kearney’s Fitness, and he can’t wait to get started.

Eamon, who moved to Newry eight years ago from Downpatrick, is well known throughout the area. You might have met him through one of the many sports he has been involved in locally.

Eamon explained, “I have always been involved in sports and fitness. From a young age I have dabbled in and out of many sports including Basketball, Karate, Kickboxing, Boxing, Gaelic, Soccer, MMA and BJJ.

“However, I spend more time now in the gym and keeping myself fit and healthy. For me it’s too much to do two things at once when you consider on top of your training you have the most important side of it and that’s nutrition.

“If you don’t get that right then you’re wasting your time. It’s an expensive hobby but I enjoy it,” he laughs.

Eamon’s background in sports coupled with his accreditation and qualifications makes him a force to be reckoned with when it comes to health and fitness.

He continued, “ I am a qualified level 2 gym/fitness instructor and level 3 personal trainer. “I am also currently in college studying for a foundation degree in sport, exercise and fitness which I will complete this time next year and then go onto complete the BSc (Hons) degree in sport and exercise sciences.”

The 28 year old insists his clients will benefit from his many years of experience but he’s modest enough to acknowledge that in an ever changing world, he still has much to learn.

Eamon has dabbled in many sports throughout the years but his main focus remains in the gym

“First and foremost, I must point out that I do not have a ‘know it all attitude’. There is far too many trainers out there who think they do,” he commented.

“I am honest and as fair as they come, every day is a school day for me whereby I am constantly learning and updating my knowledge. I make mistakes and I’m not afraid to admit it, but I learn and move on.

So what can clients expect from Kearney’s Fitness? Well, according to Eamon, clients can expect him to work with them in a two way relationship.

“Whatever I lay out for them I will have done it myself, revised all teaching points and techniques and be knowledgeable in what I’m teaching. I will always pre-plan my classes and change them up every class so that no two classes are the same.”

Eamon says Kearney’s Fitness will have something for everyone of all abilities.

“At the minute I have a few ideas and have a rough timetable up on my Facebook page (kearneysfitness) that include the following classes, Boxercise, which mimics the training that boxers do and will include shadow boxing, pad work, core/abs and general fitness exercises all mixed into one.

“Circuits will include everything from body weight exercises, free weight exercises, suspension training, plyometrics, abs/core and pad/bag work. Strength and conditioning classes will focus more on heavy exercises and more intense cardio/High intensity interval training.

“Remember, this timetable will change to how you want it, just let me know and don’t forget to pre-book,” he added.

With a harsh economic climate Eamon understands that value for money is critical. With classes for just £3.50, spots will surely fill up quickly.

“Private personal training classes are £10 which will be 1 on 1 or 1 or 2 if they wish to split the cost with a friend. I am also offering a 12 week transformation package which will tie the client into a 12 week program in which they will see me a few times a week, get nutritional guidance, fitness testing, measurements and round the clock support.”

Eamon added, “I would just like to thank Adrian Patterson and Bobby Lavery for giving me the opportunity to get this up and running. I also want thank everyone who has supported me. Like any other business it’s going to be tough getting started and get up and running but with my determination, I should be ok.”

Kearney’s Fitness is based in Newcam Fitness Centre, McQuillans Yard, Old Warrenpoint Rd Newry.
