Councillor calls for Translink rethink on local bus service

Crotlieve Sinn Féin Councillor Mick Murphy has called for an urgent rethink on Translink’s decision to cut evening bus services from Newry to Warrenpoint and Kilkeel, meaning the last bus from Newry to Warrenpoint and Kilkeel is now 6.15pm.

Speaking to Newry Times, Councillor Murphy said, “I was horrified to hear that Translink will be cutting the 6.45pm bus from Newry to Kilkeel and the 10.10pm bus from Newry to Warrenpoint from Monday, April 8th.

“I have been contacted by many shop workers in the Buttercrane and Quays shopping centres who now have no other means to get home. Newry Call Centre workers who work until 9pm are in the same position.

“In this difficult economic climate when many people are unable to afford the expense of a car and local business needs stimulating it is a disgrace that Translink manager Greg McLaughlin has made this decision.

Murphy added, “Both services are popular and greatly needed. At the monthly council meeting on Monday, April 8th I will not only calling on Translink to reinstate the two services but extend the 10.10pm from Newry all the way to Kilkeel and back.”
