McKevitt calls for NI Water to bring forward Rostrevor scheme immediately
MLA for South Down Karen McKevitt is calling on Northern Ireland Water to bring forward a scheme immediately in order to prevent future flooding in the Rostrevor area.
Speaking to Newry Times, McKevitt said, “The heavy down pour of rain last week caused widespread flooding throughout the constituency of South Down particularly in Burren, Rostrevor, Warrenpoint and Mayobridge.
“I, along with fellow SDLP councillors, witnessed first-hand the extensive damage caused by flooding and was on hand all weekend to help those badly affected. One of the worst affected areas was Saint Judes Gardens in Rostrevor.
“Saint Judes residents have witnessed a number of floods over the last few years but to date Northern Ireland Water has not addressed this issue. I am calling on Northern Ireland Water to introduce a water pumping scheme in Rostrevor without further delay.
“The residents have suffered enough and they deserve to see their homes and gardens protected. This heavy rain fall has shown that in many areas we do not have the correct infrastructure in place to deal with such weather conditions.
McKevitt added, “I intend to hold meetings with Roads Service and Rivers Agency to discuss preventative flooding measures that can be introduced in Burren, Mayobridge and Warrenpoint as well.”
