Mayor presents certificates to “Ourselves, Our Heritage” programme members
Councillor John McArdle, Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council presented the certificates of completion to the members of AMH New Horizons who concluded the “Ourselves, Our Heritage” programme at Newry and Mourne Museum, Monday 18th February.
The six week course “Ourselves, Our Heritage” was devised to help participants learn about the area in which they live. This involved handling artefacts from the Museum’s collection and going on guided tours of Newry City.
Many of the artefacts were donated by local people that reflect their own experiences, interests, hobbies. When put together they build up a picture of how Newry and Mourne developed over hundreds of years.
By visiting historic sites like the Town Hall, St Patrick’s graveyard and Bagenal’s Castle the group were able to see how Newry has developed, and learn more about its historic citizens.
Part of the course was the emphasis on developing artistic skills and at the presentations, the art work which was inspired by what the group had learned and seen over the six weeks was on display.
Speaking at the event, Mayor McArdle congratulated the New Horizons group and stated, “Hopefully you have learned more about the history of Newry and Mourne and the work that the Museum does and I am sure we will see you back again at the Museum, congratulations.”
