‘Someone could have been killed’, blasts McGinn after Council lorry attack

Newry and Mourne Sinn Fein Councillor Pat McGinn has said that the driver of a Council Refuse lorry which was attacked by a crowd of snow ball throwing youths had an extremely frightening experience and could have been seriously injured.

Speaking to Newry Times, Councillor McGinn said that judging from the accident report, it appeared to be a very deliberate attack on a council vehicle and its driver.

“One large snowball packed with ice was fired directly at the driver’s side, smashing the windscreen. The driver could have been seriously injured or killed. There are no high jinks or fun in this type of vandalism.

“The Council Refuse lorry had to be taken off the route to be repaired thus causing further inconvenience to residents. The driver, I have no doubt, was badly shook. Our staff and indeed any driver of a vehicle should not be subject to these types of dangerous actions.”
