If you’ve never failed, you’ve never tried anything new
It was Einstein who so wisely said, “If you’ve never failed, you’ve never tried anything new”.
But, it was Tommy Bowe who brought this message home for me at a recent business forum in Belfast.
Tommy described in detail his rise to fame as a mere teenager, receiving continuous acclaim for his contribution to provincial and international rugby.
Until, at the tender age of twenty-one, he was dropped from his country team right before the rugby world cup; describing this as some of the darkest but greatest days of his professional career.
Following this, Tommy spent some time playing for Wales before returning to Ireland recently to regain his position on the team, and with a new found respect and understanding of his own strengths and weaknesses.
This simple principle is, in fact, the difference between the people who courageously decide to take a risk with their ideas, and those who are put off by the fear of failure and, in many cases, what other people might think.
However, in life there are no certainties, and almost everything has a risk factor attached.
Those who take risks in life do so because they believe in themselves, and what they are doing; and the greatest of those people have the ability to get back up when they fall down, learn from their experiences and move forward with a positive attitude to try something new all over again.
In a time when jobs are hard to come by, financial uncertainty is a regular cause of sleepless nights and there doesn’t seem to be a sign of any short-term recovery; it is important to believe in yourself and your ideas, and to deliver your own destiny by trying something new.
So, stand up and go for it! The only thing stopping you now is… YOU!
