McKevitt congratulates Pittsburgh-bound young people

SDLP South Down MLA Karen McKevitt has congratulated the 160 young people and their leaders from youth clubs in Newry and Mourne who are heading for Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as part of the Norbrook POINTER programme.

The Norbrook POINTER scheme, which is funded by the private sector, the voluntary sector and the PSNI which operates the scheme, aims to encourage children and young people to make use of youth clubs and community facilities of all kinds.

Speaking to Newry Times, Ms McKevitt said: “We have got great buy-in from the community and voluntary sector and best of all from the young people themselves. They have raised £50,000 to pay for this trip. In Pittsburgh they will meet other young people in related schemes and help prepare a return trip in connection with the World Police and Fire Games which will be taking place here next year.”

She added, “We often hear about policing in the community but it cuts both ways and the Norbrook POINTER scheme is a good example of the community in policing.”
