Hazzard praises Down Hurlers success

Chris Hazzard MLA has welcomed the recent Down GAA success following the Down Minor Hurlers victory over Antrim in the Ulster Championship.

“I am absolutely delighted to see the honor and pride of our county jersey restored by this team of young fellas,” Hazzard commented. “The county has waited 18 long years for success at this level, in-fact most of these boys were not even born when Down last took the title. This victory over Antrim I hope marks a new era in Down hurling, and I expect that names like Eoghan Sands and Caolán Bailie will become household names across the country, like their fathers before them.”

“Indeed a special mention has to go to Caolán, who is brother of our team member Naomi, and who put in a superb performance resulting in a man of the match award.”

He continued, “Each and every player hurled their heart and soul out on the day and ultimately it was a great team effort which saw them defeating the favorites, Antrim. I intend to organise a civic reception for the boys in Assembly buildings to mark the boy’s achievement, and if our footballers continue with the counties success on Sunday, they too will be invited to attend.”

“My colleague Mickey Coogan also intends to formally host the boys as Chairman of Down District Council. These boys deserve every beam of the limelight they will receive over the coming weeks and months and I hope to share in their success,” Hazzard added.
