Barnardo’s Newry volunteer celebrated
Catherine McCann from Newry who volunteers with Barnardo’s Newry Family Resource Centre was one of 250 Barnardo’s volunteers honoured at a recent reception held at Parliament Buildings. The event was held as part of Volunteers’ Week 2012 to recognise the dedication and commitment of Barnardo’s volunteers.
Catherine is one of 25 volunteers with Barnardo’s Newry Family Resource Centre who volunteer to support contact between children and parents who are in the process of divorce or separation. Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland presented Catherine with a special certificate of recognition.
Lynda Wilson, Director Barnardo’s NI said; “We are so proud of our volunteers and the work they do they are the backbone of our organisation. We have over 250 volunteers across 20 services who give up their time to support us in the work we do with children and families. Volunteers can take on a range of roles from befriending, to mentoring, to supporting young people with disabilities, supporting parent groups or reading to children in schools etc. Having dedicated volunteers helps us reach more children who are vulnerable and also helps us deliver quality services, which is what we all want for our children.”
Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland said he wanted to pay tribute to the volunteers for their commitment and work they do in supporting Barnardo’s. He said: “Volunteers like Catherine are an inspiration to us all. I commend Barnardo’s for recognising the wonderful contribution their volunteers make. Volunteering is an enriching experience with benefits for society and the volunteer. I would encourage more people to get involved in volunteering to support causes they are passionate about.”
