‘World games an opportunity to showcase South Down’ – McKevitt

SDLP South Down MLA Karen McKevitt said next year’s World Police and Fire Games will provide a unique opportunity to show the whole world what South Down has to offer.

Speaking to Newry Times, McKevitt said, “I was pleased to welcome the team to Kilbroney a month ago so I am delighted to hear that the Games mountain bike contest will be held there. We could have up to 500 police and fire officers from around the world taking part, and the eyes of the world will be on them and on South Down. Work is under way on the mountain bike track which will remain as a tourism asset and legacy for the area after the Games.”

“This  has  been a long-term project of mine. I first raised the possibility of participation to Newry and Mourne Council nearly three years ago in my report on the Milwaukee Irish Festival. It has been at the top of my agenda ever since and I am glad to see that there is now such strong support at local and official level.”

She added, “This is a unique opportunity for our local councils and everyone with an interest or involvement in tourism to come together to show the world what we have to offer. We in the SDLP South Down Team will do all in our power to make the Games a great success.”
