Bessbrook Police Station to close ‘within weeks’

Following a period of community consultation the closure of Bessbrook police station was approved by the Policing Board in 2009 and will take place in the coming weeks. Policing resources currently based in Bessbrook will be reallocated to Newtownhamilton police station, thereby maintaining response and neighbourhood policing capabilities within South Armagh.

Bessbrook Police Station will close for good in the coming weeks

Sector Commander Inspector Lorraine Dobson commented,

“The closure of Bessbrook station will be a poignant occasion due to the history the station holds but it is also an exciting opportunity for my officers to deliver a high quality policing service for the entire South Armagh Area, with the move to Newtownhamilton providing us a with a central facility which is more suitable for modern policing.”

“Police will maintain a presence at Bessbrook station for several weeks to come, however it will not be possible to facilitate callers in person to Bessbrook Station from Friday 1st June 2012. From 1st June, Newtownhamilton station will be open to members of the public between 11am – 5pm & 8.30pm – midnight 7 days a week.”

He added, “Police will continue to patrol South Armagh on a full time basis. To contact the station by phone, call 0845 600 8000 and ask for Newtownhamilton or in the case of an emergency dial 999.
