Newcastle beach clean-up a huge success

Alliance Newcastle Councillor Patrick Clarke took part in hugely successful the clean-up of Newcastle beach on Saturday 26th May assisted by local residents.

Speaking to Newry Times, he stated: “I wish to thank the people and young community who turned out and assisted in cleaning Newcastle beach on Saturday. Newcastle beach is part of our natural environment and therefore it was great to see the people and young community making the effort on a very hot Saturday morning to remove rubbish from Newcastle beach. I was also very pleased to see very responsible dog owners carrying their black bags with their dogs while walking Newcastle Beach.”

Councillor Clarke also commented on the lack of dog litter bins along Newcastle beach, “During the beach clean-up of Newcastle beach from the Downs road passing the Slieve Donard Hotel it was clear that some dog walkers were leaving dog litter bags along the wall and on the beach. A number of dog walkers indicated to me that there were no dog litter bins to deposit dog litter bags along this stretch of beach.”

Clarke added, “I will therefore be asking the Environmental Health department at Down District Council to consider putting up red dog litter bins along Newcastle beach from Downs road entrance onto Newcastle beach to end of Slieve Donard Hotel boundary.”
