Danny Kennedy expresses concern over future of Historical Enquiries Team
Newry and Armagh MLA Danny Kennedy has this week expressed his concern on the future of the Historical Enquiries Team. Bessbrook born Kennedy also said that he will be seeking a meeting with Matt Baggott on the issue.
Mr Kennedy said, “The chief constable has recently outlined a substantial hole in the policing budget equating to £25million. It is important that we receive assurances around the work of the Historical Enquiries Team.”
“The funding for the HET runs out during 2012-2013 and the operation of this body costs £6million a year. The HET are currently working their way through the unsolved murders of the troubles and there are many families who are waiting for the truth to be uncovered.”
He concluded, “Any reductions in the HET budget will primarily affect administration staff, depleting the numbers and quality of the team. We may also see many reports into atrocities, such as the Enniskillen bomb, delayed or postponed. This news will be of great concern to the families who will be affected.”
