Additional Consultant appointed to Daisy Hill’s Emergency Department
The Southern Health and Social Care Trust has appointed an additional Consultant to the Emergency Department at Daisy Hill Hospital. The appointment of Dr Tom Young in January means that the Department now has a team of four senior medical staff. Dr Young trained in Yorkshire and has worked as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine in Sheffield and the Belfast Trust. His wife is from Newry, so he is familiar with Daisy Hill and the local area and is settling into his role in one of the best performing Emergency Departments in Northern Ireland. Dr Young’s particular interests are in Emergency Medicine for the Elderly and Service Improvement.
This includes encouraging appropriate use of services by patients and professionals and supporting the community in finding alternatives to hospital admission.Daisy Hill Emergency Department treats over 36,000 people each year and this is projected to rise to 50,000 over the next ten years. Speaking to Newry Times, Dr Young stated, “We want to provide high quality resuscitation and emergency care to all patients who attend the Department. We prioritise the most urgent patients and look to support patients in identifying the most appropriate service for their needs, which is not always us.”
Dr Young is looking forward to the challenges ahead at Daisy Hill and the completion of the Emergency Department’s refurbishment. The first phase £400,000 extension was completed last autumn and doubled the size of the Department. The second phase, due to be completed in spring is a £490,000 project and includes more treatment areas, improved facilities for treating children and high standard isolation facilities to comply with best practice in infection control. The Department was originally built to cater for half the number of patients who currently attend, so this investment is greatly welcomed by staff.
Dr Young added, “I am delighted to be joining this dedicated team. We want to provide the highest standard of care using the best possible facilities. I look forward to contributing to this through clinical work, education and governance within the Department and working with patients and colleagues throughout Daisy Hill and the wider Southern Trust hospital network.”
