PSNI: ‘Antisocial behaviour on canal towpath will not be tolerated’
Newry Neighbourhood Policing Team are warning youths that antisocial behaviour in the area of the towpath will not be tolerated. Officers are aware that youths have been congregating at the towpath which runs from Mourneview to Carnbane. They have received reports of youths drinking, lighting fires, leaving rubbish and being rowdy.
Neighbourhood Constable Dougan said: “We want to reassure local residents that we aware of their concerns and will take steps to tackle these activities. We will increase patrols in the area and would encourage anyone who notices actvity of this kind to contact us straight away.”
“The young people who are congregating here should stop and think about what they are doing. Not only is your behaviour intimidating and disruptive for local residents but it could also take you down a path which will have consequences on choices later in your life. If you are found to be involved in antisocial behaviour or criminal activity like damaging property or assault you could end up with a criminal record. This will have major consequences on careers, education and travel plans further down the line.”
Constable Dougan concluded by saying, “I am also asking parents to support us and talk to your children about the consequences of antisocial behaviour. Let them know that this area is not an appropriate place for them to congregate and make a point of knowing where they are going and who they are with and help to keep them out of trouble.”
Anyone with concerns can contact Newry Neighbourhood Team on 0845 600 8000.
