Local football round up 14th January 2012

Premier Division

Kevin O'Rourke gives Dusty O'Hagan - the Cleary goalkeeper - no chance, to give Windmill a 2-1 lead.

Windmill Stars now share the lead in the Carnbane Premier division after a 3-1 win over Cleary Celtic at Frank Curran Park. Joe Fegan gave Windmill the lead but Chris Murphy got Cleary back on level terms from the penalty spot. In the second half Kevin O’Rourke put Windmill 2-1 ahead with a fine strike, catching Dusty O’Hagan in the Cleary goal off his line. Windmill then dominated possession for the next 20 minutes of the second half and looked like getting a third goal.

Cleary weathered the storm though and pushed for an equaliser. They nearly got it when Mark Cahill broke  through on goal and with just the keeper to beat, he mishit the ball which fell in the path of a team mate who somehow managed to hit the ball wide. Windmill managed to hang on despite a Cleary onslaught and caught them on the break five minutes from time. Joe Fegan crossed the ball into Kevin O’Rourke to grab his second goal of the game and give Windmill the three points.

Killeavy are the other team to share top spot after they beat Ballybot United 5-2.  Their talisman Anthony O’Hare and the hard working Barry Magee were among the scorers. Rockview United’s title hopes were dealt a blow as they went down 4-0 to Kilkeel Athletic.  Rory Cunningham grabbed a first half hat trick and Liam Rooney put the game to bed with the fourth goal midway through the second half.

First Division

North End Strollers could only manage a scoreless draw with Ashgrove Rovers so this gave Whitecross the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the division.  They did so in emphatic fashion with an 8-2 victory over Clanrye Athletic at Jenning’s Park. Darren Shields grabbed a hat trick and Cathal McSherry chipped in with a brace. Liam Smyth, Colly O’Hanlon and Alan Bann with a trademark free kick completed the scoring for the South Armagh side.

Grasshoppers claimed all three points despite Gerry Roger’s hat trick for Rostrevor Rovers. Ronan Byrne’s two goals helped the ‘Hoppers get the better of Rostrevor at Kilbroney in a seven goal thriller.

Newry Juventus had a shock 1-0 win over Drums. Juve’s midfield dynamo Kevin Taylor scored the only goal of the game with a finish from close range. Stephen Bradley impressed most for Juventus.

David Murphy scored the pick of Milburn’s goals as they easily brushed aside the challenge of Cartwheel United with a 4-0 win. Micky Morgan, Packy McNulty and Dermot Morgan were the other goal scorers.

Jude Rooney and Chris Taylor goals gave Villa Rovers a 2-0 victory over Bohemians in a mid table clash.

Mid Ulster Shield

Newry Celtic eased to victory away to Lisanally Rangers in the third round of the Mid Ulster Shield. Gavin McLoughlin, the two Larkin brothers and Sean McStay scored the goals. Bessbrook United got through their fourth round tie with a 2-1 win away to Mid Ulster Division One side Derryhirk United.
