*** Breaking News *** Police cordon off parts of City Centre as a precaution over severe weather
The horrendous weather conditions currently engulfing the Newry and Mourne area has prompted police to cordon off parts of the city centre as a precaution. Police have said an unstable wall at the Old Creamery building adjacent to Argos and JJB Sports may be unstable and they fear one of the walls may come down in the current weather. Police say they have cordoned of the area until safety barriers can be erected, which is expected to be around 3:30pm today.
Speaking exclusively to Newry Times, a PSNI spokesperson said, “The wall has been examined and deemed unstable. Due to the current weather conditions there is a real danger of the wall collapsing. Barriers are being put in place and and members of the public should stay outside of the cordoned area.”
The news of cordons will be an unwelcome situation for shoppers to deal with in the area, with Newry already under severe pressure with traffic delays in the last several weeks of the Christmas shopping spree. Reports suggest the current winds range from 60-70mph but should ease by tonight (Thursday).
