Reinstatement of Carrickore services welcomed

SDLP Assembly Member for Newry and Armagh Justin McNulty MLA has welcomed confirmation from the Southern Health and Social Care Trust that the short breaks services at Carrickore Respite Centre in Newry are to be reinstated immediately.

McNulty, who has been working closely with the families concerned in recent months explained, “Confirmation that the full short-breaks service offered at Carrickore is to be reinstated with immediate effect is welcome, no more so than for those who rely so much on the service.

“Parents and carers have described it as their lifeline for both them, their children and their families. This has been a very tough period for the families involved who for months now have had their access to respite seriously disrupted or non-existent.

“The decision to reinstate the short breaks service today is down to the determined efforts of the Parents’ Group working with the Southern Trust. Having worked closely with the families and facilitated numerous meetings between them and the Trust I have only admiration for the dignified and determined manner in which the parents fought for the respite care their children deserve.

“Today’s news is good news for Carrickore but this is only one part of the solution. We are facing ongoing restrictions to the respite service in Oak Lands in Armagh City,” he warned.

“Families around Armagh City and District face the very same issue. This can only be resolved on a permanent basis with the provision of a regional service for those with the most challenging needs.

“All these young people and their families deserve the very best services we can provide. I have sought a meeting with the Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health on the provision of a permanent regional, and sustainable locally based respite services,” McNulty added.
