Newry’s Sacred Heart students take part in new Girls’ Choir

The Charles Wood Festival of Music and Summer School is delighted to announce the formation of a new Girls’ Choir, proudly supported by Ulster Carpets and Arts & Business Northern Ireland.

With a total of 38 girls aged between 12 and 18 from across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, the Girls’ Choir will be directed by Ian Keatley, Organist and Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin.

During the week-long residential course, which will take place in Armagh as part of the Charles Wood Festival and Summer School from 20 – 27 August, the girls will have an exceptionally busy and no doubt fabulous week, experiencing intensive, fun training in singing and choral music, and enjoying workshops with world-renowned conductor Dr David Hill and celebrity composer, John Rutter CBE.

Choristers attending the course this summer represent many cathedral, church and school choirs including St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cathedral Armagh, The Royal School Armagh, Sacred Heart Grammar School Newry, St Anne’s Cathedral Belfast, Wallace High School Lisburn, Christ Church Cathedral Dublin, St Fin Barre’s Cathedral Cork and St Mary’s Cathedral Limerick.

Firstly, we are pro-actively strengthening our commitment to work with children from local communities including, for example, Armagh, Portadown, Newry and Lisburn.

“Secondly, we are recruiting young singers from all over the island of Ireland to promote ecumenism whilst supporting positive cross-community and cross-border relations.”

The Inaugural Concert of the Charles Wood Girls’ Choir will be in Ulster Carpets hometown of Portadown on Wednesday 23rd August at 1.10pm in St Mark’s Parish Church. The Girls’ Choir will also perform at the Festival Gala Concert in St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral Armagh on Friday 25th August at 8pm, and lead services in various churches, including Sung Mass in St Malachy’s Church Armagh on Thursday 24th August, and Sung Eucharist and Festal Evensong in St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral Armagh on Sunday 27th August.
