‘Electoral Office must assist those seeking to vote’ – Cathal Boylan

electionSinn Féín Newry & Armagh Assembly Election candidate Cathal Boylan has said the Electoral Office should be doing more to assist those seeking to register to vote.

Speaking to Newry Times, he said, “The argument for taking 60,000 people off the register do not stack up, they are effectively being denied their right to vote.

“Indeed, many of those who have been removed from the register voted last May. Here in this Newry & Armagh constituency 6000 people have been removed from the register and we have been urging people to get re-registered.

Jan End 2017“In the meantime the Electoral Office has released their addendum list which shows that in January more people were removed from the register than put on.

“Sinn Féin have been in contact with the Electoral Office to ensure that they are assisting those seeking to vote and enable them to get back on the register.

“I would urge people to make sure they are on the register, if anyone is unsure they should contact any Sinn Féin rep or the Electoral Office.

Boylan added, “It is not the job of the electoral office to deny people the vote, it is to ensure that those who are entitled to vote get to vote.”
