Newry mum wins ‘Football Mum of the Year’ award

November 2016 - Picture by Darren Kidd / Press Eye.Newry mum Kate Cahill has won the prestigious McDonald’s Football Mum of the Year Award at the 2016 McDonald’s Irish FA Community Awards in Belfast City Hall.

Kate was presented with her award by McDonald’s Football Mum of the Year Ambassador Alison Nicholl.

The Football Mum of the Year Award was presented to Kate for all she has done at St Mary’s Youth Club and she was described as a true role model within her local community.

She has been organising grassroots football at St Mary’s Youth Club in Newry for over 26 years, juggling family and work alongside a passionate devotion to the beautiful game.

nov-22-2016Kate views football as a brilliant tool to help break down boundaries and bring people together. She regularly organises football tournaments in Newry, bringing together clubs from all across the North to play football in a fun and enjoyable environment.

Speaking to Newry Times, after collecting the award, Kate said, “To be nominated for an award was special but to go on and win it is incredible. It’s been a pleasure to help develop and nurture footballing talent in Newry. Thank you to everyone who nominated me!”

Pat Jennings, McDonald’s Head of Northern Ireland Football, said, “The McDonald’s Irish FA Community Awards is our way of saying thank you to the coaches, clubs and volunteers who give up their time to help young footballers across Northern Ireland shine.

“Everyone that has been nominated for an award this year has shown outstanding commitment to their local community and I’d like to extend my congratulations to Kate and all the nominees for their fantastic achievements in local football.”
