‘Stone throwing could lead to tragedy’ warns Newry Councillor

Sinn Fein Councillor Liz Kimmins has called on parents and schools to educate young people on the dangers of interfering with moving vehicles after youths threw stones at cars in the city.

carriveLast Friday and Saturday night young people were spotted firing stones at vehicles on the Chancellors Road from the Carrivemaclone play park.

Cllr Kimmins said the youngsters must be made aware of how dangerous their actions are before they end up with criminal records or worse, cause injury or death.

“These are not youthful hijinks; this is serious criminal behaviour that, if not stopped, will end up with young people being marked for life with criminal records or worse, causing death and destruction on our roads,” she said.

“There are serious concerns within the community about this activity and people are genuinely fearful it will lead to tragedy.

“There is no clear indication just how young the people involved in throwing stones are but I would say to parents and schools in the area, please, speak to your children about the dangers of this type of activity and the long term, possibly permanent consequences, it could have for them if they don’t stop immediately.

September 2016“Even if you are sure it’s not young people in your charge involved in this I would urge teachers and parents to speak to them anyway so that they don’t become involved.

“I want to say to the young people doing this, make no mistake, this is dangerous criminal behaviour and the courts will have no compunction whatsoever about bringing the full weight of the law down on you when you are caught, which is to say nothing of the consequences you’ll face, both legal and personal, if your stupidity robs a family of a parent or child,” she added.
