McNulty seeks committee report on Southern Relief Road

SDLP Assembly Member for Newry and Armagh Justin McNulty MLA has asked the Infrastructure Committee at Stormont to have a full briefing on the Southern Relief Road as a matter of urgency.

justin5McNulty made the request as the Committee, of which he is a member, gathered to plan its work for the Parliamentary year ahead.

McNulty said, “The Southern Relief Road is a project which has been talked about for many years and local people are frustrated by the lack of action. The development of the road would see a new link road created between the A1 Dublin Road and the A2 Warrenpoint Road, a trunk road which is leading to Warrenpoint Port.

“Over the last two mandates of the Assembly we had two MLA’s from this Constituency as Roads Minister, there had been hope that progress would have been made during their time in office but nothing happened.

“The Southern Relief Road is a major piece of infrastructure which is badly needed. The traffic coming to and from Warrenpoint Harbour is steadily increasing and they are being caught up in city traffic.

September 2016“This project is key a key economic link in the strategic infrastructure network. Businesses want to invest in areas where the infrastructure is accessible, Warrenpoint Port is a key port on this island and needs to be accessible.

The local MLA added, “I have asked that the Infrastructure Committee bring senior officials from the department before the committee and explain what progress if any has been made on this project and a time scale for delivery.

“These projects are key to the economic and social future of Newry City and South Down and we cannot allow any further delay in their projects.”
