Murphy welcomes call for all-Ireland transport planning

Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy has welcomed the publication of a major report calling for the preparation of an all-Ireland transport strategy.

murphy3Speaking after the launch of a joint IBEC/CBI report the Newry representative said the document showed that businesses were concerned about Brexit and increasingly thinking on an all Ireland basis.

“Ibec and CBI are two of the biggest business groups on the island so it’s encouraging to see them increasingly thinking on an all Ireland basis,” he said.

“The numerous references to the EU exit in this report show that the business community certainly does not think it will work in the interests of anyone in Ireland, north or south. In fact they say clearly that despite the Brexit vote, all-island investment must remain a priority.

“This report looks to the long term future concerns of the country and sets out the need to plan for a prosperous island of some ten million people.

He continued, “In particular I welcome its opposition to any sort of a hard border and its call for an all-Ireland transport strategy to ensure that people, goods and services can move freely across the island.

If we are to ensure joined up thinking between the island’s motorways, rail networks, ports and airports for the benefit of our people and economy then the British government needs to respect the vote to remain.

Murphy added, “As we have long said, and this report shows, the future of Ireland’s economy lies in unity and it is important that we prepare on an all-Ireland basis for a modern, efficient infrastructure and transport network.”
