‘Latest manufacturing export figures highlight benefits of EU markets’ – Murphy

Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy has said the latest figures published by HMRC indicate that the EU is the main export market for manufacturers in the North.

Conor MurphyThe south of Ireland remains the largest single export market for local manufacturers.

Speaking to Newry Times, Murphy said, “The latest figures published by the HMRC indicates that the EU remains the largest export market for northern manufacturers, with the main area of export being the south of Ireland.

“They also indicate that growth in the manufacturing sector in the north was bigger than that of Scotland, England or Wales. In total exports to the EU amounted to £3.5bn with exports to the south accounting for £2.1bn of that.

“Given these figures it’s clear that a Brexit would be very damaging for these markets and the growth of the manufacturing sector. With EU, which includes all-Ireland trade, accounting for 52% of manufacturing exports any additional tariffs would undoubtedly affect this trade.

May June 2016 updated“The manufacturing industry has been particularly hard hit over the past number of years. Brexit would be bad for Ireland, bad for business and trade, bad for our farmers and bad for human rights and workers rights.

He added, “Sinn Féin will be campaigning vigorously in the coming days and weeks to encourage people to vote to Put Ireland First and Vote Remain in the EU.”
