Anger over closure of main A2 road between Rostrevor and Warrenpoint

South Down Assembly Candidate Seán Rogers has added his voice to the growing number of complaints about the state of the main A2 road between Rostrevor and Warrenpoint.

rogers9Speaking to Newry Times, the SDLP MLA said local residents and road users were venting their anger and frustration on a daily basis, yet their complaints appear to be falling on deaf ears.

“It is quite unbelievable that between them, Transport NI and the Minister, seem to have downed tools and have failed to find a resolution to this issue,” he stated.

“Prior to the creation of the Newry Mourne and Down Council in May 2015, there was at least some semblance of accountability, with monthly meetings between Transport NI officers and councillors. Now there is none.

“Two years before this latest road closure, we were assured by Roads Service that a survey of the road showed the road to be sound.

“Now local people and drivers have been plunged into another nightmare of diversions and road closures. Why has an Emergency Traffic Management Plan not yet been implemented? And if the road is impassable, then where are the workmen?

Mid April 2016“When I visit the area, it is like a ghost-town, with the road blocked, and not a soul in sight,” he insisted.

“The next Assembly mandate needs to be one in which work is actually done to meet the needs of communities. For the people of Warrenpoint and Rostrevor in particular, their priority right now is the proper repair and re-opening of the A2.

“And people need to have confidence that as soon as problems arise, an Emergency Traffic Management Plan will be activated. In the meantime, Transport NI and the DRD Minister need to explain why they have so spectacularly failed the people of South Down in Warrenpoint and Rostrevor,” Rogers added.
