Murphy labels Loanda Crescent delay ‘a scandal’
Newry MLA Conor Murphy has written to senior management in the Housing Executive urging them to sort out what he described as the ‘Loanda Crescent retrofit scandal’.
The Sinn Féin MLA said it was unacceptable that residents were still waiting for the much needed project almost a decade after it was first mooted.
“This scheme has been promoted and indeed promised to residents going back some time but to date there has been no movement on this,” he told Newry Times.
“My colleagues, Councillors Liz Kimmins and Charlie Casey, have been working on behalf of the residents since 2014 and at that time met with the managers of the Housing Executive project.
“At that meeting Sinn Féin representatives were told that the scheme was to begin in the spring of 2015. We are now a year on from this and there is still no sign of work commencing. Worse still it has been almost 10 years since the possibility of this project was first raised with residents.
Murphy added, “It’s completely unacceptable that people should be waiting this length of time for what is a much needed project. I have written to Senior Management in the Housing Executive requesting an urgent update on the status of the project and will update residents as soon as they reply.”
