The Newry representative was following up on a visit he made to the North Street flats last month in which he described the condition of the Housing Executive maintained flats as disgraceful.

“I met with the DSD Minister, Maurice Morrow, and his senior officials to press the case for movement on the Clare House Flats in Newry,” he said.

“I presented the Minister with photographic evidence of the deterioration of the outside of the building and the level of damp and condensation within some of the flats.

“I argued for an early decision from Housing Executive in relation to their plans for the flats and for necessary maintenance and improvement works to be carried out in the meantime.

“The Minister and officials assured me that an assessment on the best future for the residents and the flats had been undertaken and an appraisal and decision on this would be taken within six months.

Murphy added, “Housing Executive officials also agreed to address issues of damp and deterioration in Clare House in the immediate period. While I’m happy with the outcome of the meeting I will continue to push the issue and as such we agreed to meet again within six months to review progress.”
