6 year old girl dies in Newry collision
A 6 year old girl has died following a road traffic collision on the Hilltown Road in Newry this morning, Saturday 9th January.
The girl was a passenger in a Volkswagen car that was involved in a collision with a Seat car and a tractor at around 9.55am.
Two women, aged 24 and 42, were taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.
Inspector Stephen Humphries is appealing to anyone who was travelling on the Hilltown Road around this time and who witnessed the collision to contact local Police in Newry or the Collision Investigation Unit in Sprucefield on the non-emergency number 101.
The Hilltown Road remains closed at this time.
Speaking to Newry Times, Independent Newry Councillor Kevin McAteer said, “I am saddened to hear of such tragic news. My thoughts and prayers are with the little girl’s family at this sad time. I want to remind people to be careful on our roads, particularly with frost forecast over the next few weeks.”
Local SDLP MLA Karen McKevitt echoed these sentiments. “My thoughts and prayers are with the family and I have no doubt the entire community will come together to support the family. This is every parents nightmare. It’s just heartbreaking.”
McKevitt’s party colleague, South Down SDLP MP Margaret Ritchie said, “The untimely death of any individual is always sad, but the death of a child so soon after the Christmas period is particularly poignant.
She added, “My deepest sympathies lie with the parents, family and relatives of this child. There is no doubt that the local community will support this family in their grief and bereavement. The whole community of the local family will hold this family in their warm embrace.”
