County Down ‘the pinnacle for golf’ – McKevitt
SDLP Culture, Arts and Leisure Spokesperson Karen McKevitt MLA has welcomed Golf Digest’s ranking of Royal County Down as the world’s top golf course.
The local course pipped Augusta National to the coveted top spot in this year’s rankings.
Speaking to Newry Times, McKevitt said, “It will come to no surprise to many local golfers that Royal County Down is considered one of the world’s best golf courses. Its challenging layout and beautifully kept fairways and greens make it the envy of clubs across the globe.
“But to be awarded the coveted top spot in Golf Digest’s course rankings is a spectacular achievement. For a local course to pip Augusta National, Pine Valley and Pebble Beach to the top spot is incredible.
“It reflects the tireless work put in by Royal County Down’s diligent green-keeping staff as well as the board and members who have been to the fore of promoting Newcastle as a global golfing destination. It’s a fitting achievement to be recognised in the top flight of the world’s courses.
She added, “Golf Digest summed it up to a tee ‘On a clear spring day… there is no lovelier place in golf’. When there’s a gale blowing though the course becomes a very different, but no less exciting, challenge!”
