Outrage at massive tyre dump at Mourne’s beauty spot

While expressing her thanks to all those involved in clearing a massive tyre dump at the ‘top of the world’ beauty spot on Carmeen Road outside Hilltown, Sinn Féin South Down MLA Caitríona Ruane has expressed her outrage at the extent of the dumping.

tyre2Speaking to Newry Times, Ruane said, “I’d like to thank the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Environmental Officers who, after a number of representations to the council from Sinn Féin councillor Mickey Ruane, got together with the relevant agencies and trustees of the land to clear this gigantic eyesore.

“I would especially like to thank the farmer who alerted Councillor Ruane to this illegal dump and gave both the access to the land and the machinery needed for what proved to be a very lengthy operation. In all over 800 tyres were collected.

“This is one of the most beautiful viewing areas in the whole of the Mournes, much loved by locals and visitors alike, and it is an absolute disgrace that this kind of anti-social behaviour has taken place on this scale.

She added, “I would urge the PSNI to visit all local tyre-related businesses to ensure there can be no repetition of this outrage and would ask the public to be vigilant in reporting any fly tipping and illegal dumping to the PSNI.”
