‘DFP stalling on NAMA investigation is unacceptable’ – Bradley

SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh and Deputy Chair of the Committee for Finance and Personal Dominic Bradley has described the delaying of the DFP Committee’s investigation into Project Eagle as unacceptable.

Bradley made his comments after Permanent Secretary of DFP David Sterling stated he was ‘unwilling or unable’ to answer many of the Committee’s questions surrounding the NAMA sale of their Northern Ireland property portfolio.

Speaking to Newry Times, Bradley said, “What Mr Sterling hasn’t said appears to be much more revealing than anything he has said before the Committee today. He did nothing to allay the fears that there was impropriety on the part of DFP surrounding the sale of NAMAs NI property portfolio.

“While he is more than entitled to refuse to answer hypothetical questions or those pertaining to opinion, he was unwilling or unable to address several factual questions surrounding important issues,” he insisted.

“The Committee asked Mr Sterling to appear earlier following the break of this story and so he has been given ample time to prepare for the obvious questions that he was simple unable to answer. Mr Sterling offered to respond in writing to many of our questions so it seems he will have a lot of writing to do when he returns to his office.

“Vital to this process is asking the right questions to the right people and I have no doubt that the evidence we could hear from previous Finance Ministers Simon Hamilton and Sammy Wilson will shed greater light on this issue than anything Mr Sterling could have told us.

Bradley added, “The Committee is only interested in getting to the facts of this matter and Mr Sterling’s stalling of this process, whether intentional or unintentional, is simply unacceptable.”
