‘Villiers can’t ignore British government responsibility’ – Murphy
Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy has said the British government’s austerity agenda is the ‘greatest threat to the political institutions in the North’.
Speaking to Newry Times, Murphy said, “There is no doubt that the political institutions are facing a threat and that threat is coming from the British government’s dogmatic adherence to austerity policies.
“Try as she might Theresa Villiers simply cannot ignore the fact that the actions of this British government in slashing £1.5 billion from the block grant, and indications of billions more in further cuts, have created the difficulties currently facing the Executive.
“The reality is that austerity isn’t working. It isn’t working in Britain, it isn’t working in Ireland and it certainly isn’t working in the North. Instead of austerity we need to see sustainable and workable finances for the Executive and investment to grow the economy and protect public services,” he added.
