‘Drivers, slow down or face prosecution’, warns Newry Councillor
Councillor Fitzpatrick is urging drivers to slow down or face prosecution.
The SDLP Crotlieve Councillor issued the warning following repeated instances of speeding along Newry Road, Mayobridge, in close proximity to local school, St Patrick’s Primary.
Councillor Fitzpatrick said, “Drivers need to be aware of pedestrians, particularly the local school children who cross the busy road on their journey to and from school.
“The Lollipop Lady is charged with guiding the children across junctions safely but more and more frequently drivers are not heeding the signals given by the Lollipop Lady and are continuing to drive when children are still crossing.
“This is very concerning and needs to stop before a serious accident occurs,” she warned.
“I am working closely with the local school Principal Mrs Ryan, the Neighbourhood Policing Team and Transport NI on this issue.
“Transport NI has agreed to re-mark the mini roundabout on the Newry Road and the Neighbourhood Policing Team will maintain a greater presence along this route to monitor speed and will prosecute repeat offenders if necessary.
“It is important that school children from the village and their parents are able to walk, or even cycle, to and from the school safely.
“The children in Saint Patrick’s Primary School have been working with Sustrans, a charity dedicated to enabling people to travel by foot or bike for the benefit of our environment and our health.
“The school has educated the children on the Green Cross Code but we need drivers to do their part too.
Councillor Fitzpatrick added, “I, along with local residents will continue to work to make this area safer for drivers and pedestrians. This would include increased signage and the resurfacing of the road in the short term.”
