Newry student Brendan Digney awarded £25,000 scholarship
Brendan Digney, a student from Newry who is studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Queen’s, has been awarded a scholarship by Northern Ireland Electricity.
The scholarship package, which is worth £25K, includes financial support as well as the opportunity to spend a year’s placement and each summer working for the Company.
Brendan is a past pupil of St Colman’s College in Newry and is in the first year of his studies at Queen’s University. Brendan will be working with Northern Ireland Electricity this summer.
Commenting on the scholarship, Brendan said, “I am delighted to have been awarded a scholarship by Northern Ireland Electricity. It is great to not only get financial support during my studies but also to have the opportunity to put the theory I learn in the degree into practice, through work placements with the Company.”
Dr David McNeill, Assistant Director of Education for Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Queens commented, “I would like to congratulate Brendan on receiving this scholarship and wish him all the best in his future career as an electrical engineer.
“Today we face global challenges to provide clean, green energy for all and electrical engineering will be the key to delivering this, so Brendan is joining the profession at an exciting and challenging time.”
Northern Ireland Electricity launched the scholarship scheme in 2011 as a means of recruiting good graduates into their Electrical Engineering Graduate Scheme.
There is currently a shortage of electrical engineering graduates in Northern Ireland and throughout the UK, as they are in high demand, not only in the power industry, but areas as diverse as ITand connected health.
