From student to politician in one easy move for Newry man
For Newry man Kevin McAteer, graduating with a BSc in Sociology and Anthropology from Queen’s University this week will be a major achievement.
While completing his final year of study, Kevin also ran a successful election campaign, which resulted in him becoming the youngest ever councillor on Newry, Mourne and Down District council.
Not only that, but Kevin juggled three jobs while a student and also suffers from epilepsy.
Speaking to Newry Times, the SDLP councillor said, “It’s been a rollercoaster but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at Queen’s and the degree was endlessly interesting.
“Plus a Queen’s degree really enhances employability – the university has links to over 3,000 local, national and international companies.
“Right now, I’m concentrating on politics for the day-job and loving every minute of it, but it’s great to have a few strings to the bow, and who knows where my career will take me in the future?”
Kevin is celebrating his graduation with his girlfriend, mum and dad.
