Residents express concerns over Hickey’s Lane sale proposals

Newry Sinn Féin councillors Charlie Casey and Valerie Harte organised a site meeting at the request of residents of Drumgullion and Lisgullion regarding proposed sale of land at Hickey’s Lane.

Speaking about the meeting Councillor Casey said, “Local residents had contacted me to voice their concern at the proposed sale of land at Hickey’s Lane on the Armagh Road.

“In fairness to the residents they were in no way opposed to new houses being built but were rightfully fearful of the impact that the opening to this development would have on their area in terms of heavy vehicles accessing the site.

“The council Engineer and the Council Right of Way Officer along with a senior Housing Executive Official also attended this meeting and listened carefully to the concerns of the local people.

Councillor Casey’s colleague Cllr Valerie Harte commented, “These residents have displayed their fears for local people who use the lane on a daily basis and pointed out that a lot of people use the lane for walking, cycling and jogging and they are concerned that this could be lost.

“This laneway is off the busy Armagh Road and allows for safe passage away from traffic,” she added.

Casey concluded by saying, “I certainly hope that the senior Housing Officer takes all the concerns on board and reconsiders the sale of this piece of land which I believe would have a negative impact on this community if the sale was to go ahead.”
