Police hunt ‘stocky man’ after Newry newsagents burglary

Police in Newry are appealing for information following an attempted burglary.

Speaking to Newry Times, Constable Janine McAllister, Newry Response, explained, “Around 7.55pm on Sunday, 12th October, a man entered the back stairs of a newsagent shop on Monaghan Street and went into a store.

“He attempted to steal numerous packets of cigarettes however staff became aware of the man and tried to prevent him. The man made off from the shop empty handed.

“The thief is described as being around 5ft 7in tall, of stocky build with short, fair hair and a southern accent. He was wearing a purple shirt and a black jacket.

Constable McAllister added, “I am asking anyone who has information in relation to this incident to contact us in Newry on the 101 number.

“If you prefer to provide information without giving your details you can contact the independent Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Reacting to the news, local SDLP Councillor Kevin McAteer stated, “Criminal activity such as this is unacceptable. I am asking anyone with any information to contact the police and help them with their enquires.”
