McKevitt calls for Stormont reception to recognise Down champion footballers

SDLP South Down MLA Karen McKevitt has called on the Culture Minister to invite the county’s intermediate champion footballers to a civic reception at Stormont.

The Down ladies team celebrated an emphatic win over Fermanagh on Sunday to bring home the All-Ireland Intermediate title after a remarkable scoreline of 6-16 to 1-10.

Speaking to Newry Times, McKevitt explained, “I understand the Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure is to hold a celebratory reception on Tuesday 7th October for all Ulster GAA teams who have had successes in 2013/2014, and I would urge the minister to extend an invitation to the Down All-Ireland Intermediate Champions.

“It is important the Northern Ireland Assembly recognises the vast contribution that women make to sport, and seek to further increase participation of women in all sports.

“They are role models in their communities and have inspired many young people to become more involved in sport.

She added, “I think it is only right our Down champion footballers are part of the Stormont reception in recognition of such a massive sporting achievement which has brought great pride and joy to the Mourne county.”
