SDLP Newry and Armagh MLA Dominic Bradley has expressed hope the autism community in the North will hear positive news from the health minister next week regarding much needed services.

Local SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley

The assemblyman was speaking in advance of an expected statement from the minister next Tuesday in the Assembly.

Speaking to Newry Times, Bradley said, “I welcome the fact the minister will be making a statement on the cross departmental strategy on autism.

“The strategy arises out of a Private Member’s Bill I sponsored on behalf of the autism community here, and which became the Autism NI Act in 2011.

Bradley added, “I look forward to reading the minister’s statement and I’m hoping the actions contained therein will bring worthwhile improvements to services provided to people with autism.”

Whilst in one sense it’s great to hear that payment of sorts will be made the elephant in the room is the function and actions of the council officials who helped implement, organise and promote this sorry event. What checks were carried out by well paid council officials on those they were seeking to partner with in launching the newry on ice event or was the duty of the said officials simply to be placed in launch photos for event. It is very concerning for the rate payers of the district that those employed for the benefit of the ratepayers did not know or did not think to carry out. Basic checks on those who were partnering in this event and using the council name. Will there be internal disciplinary action brought against. Those officials who were tasked with the organisation of this event? If this was the private sector, those officials would be in hot water for ” dropping the ball”.
